After Marlin had led the way to the hangar, where Kevin’s spacecraft was held, he wondered how much more of this he could take. Being born a leader, like his father and siblings, meant that he wasn’t happy with just following orders. The thought didn’t linger too long, but it was there, creeping up slowly, knocking on the door of his heart.
“That spacecraft looks amazing,” Vicky said as she gently shook Mathew.
“Brick?” Jane woke up.
“Hey, how are you feeling?” Brick held her steady.
“Here,” Vicky said, as she handed the baby to Jane.
“Wait, Jane, can you manage?” Brick asked.
“I’m fine, Brick. Where are we?” Jane asked as she gestured for Brick to let her stand on her own.
“He was a sweetheart,” Vicky said as Jane took Mathew in her arms.
“Thank you, Vicky,” Jane said.
“Marlin, stop worrying. We’ll find a way in,” Brick yelled.
Vicky noticed that Marlin was having trouble figuring it out and walked toward him.
“I’ll stay here with Mathew, Jane said.
“Good idea. I’ll join them, so keep your eyes peeled. We don’t know what’s out here.” Brick looked around and heard the birds chirping, accompanied by the sound of waterfalls crashing in the distance.
“What do you think?” Vicky asked Marlin.
“Maybe the ledges?” he asked.
“That looks like the only way we’ll get in,” Brick said.
They weighed their options. “We could walk on the ledges and risk falling into the hole, or try to break through the back of the hangar,” Marlin suggested.
They couldn’t decide because there was no way they were going to risk setting off another trap. Time was running out. They needed to hurry if they were going to save Gabriel and Roman, but there was no guarantee they were alive.
“The ledges it is then.” Brick stepped forward and onto the ground that didn’t break off after the explosion.
“I’ll go next,” Vicky said, and watched Brick’s feet carefully, but she became dizzy and slipped over the edge.
Marlin reacted quickly, caught her by her wrist, kneeled down and pulled her up as small stones and dust fell on her face. His feet were slipping, but he pulled back harder and lifted her over. Vicky fell on top of him, breathed heavily, and dropped her head on his chest.
Marlin smiled, asked: “What was that?” and lifted her to her feet.
She clutched her head tightly. “I don’t know,” she said as her stomach rumbled. He looked down and back to her. “God, that is so embarrassing.” She looked down, moved away from Marlin, and clutched her stomach.
“Vicky,” he called. She lifted her hand telling him to leave it alone.
“Go on without me. I will be fine. I just need to rest.”
Marlin stepped closer as he shook his head. “You need to eat, now!” Marlin felt frustrated. “Brick, double time! Over there.” Marlin pointed to pallets.
Brick was concerned and felt a growing sense of responsibility toward Vicky; she had become his comrade. He reached the food, grabbed a few cans, and ran back. “Catch!” Brick threw cans and water from across the hangar to Marlin.
